Artist Statement

Part of Laura’s studio time focuses on colorful abstract art, created from an intuitive center, using various tools: the palette knife, squeegee, natural sponges & brushes. She is also newly exploring the fluid world of watercolors and roaming the mountains with a Polaroid, in an attempt to capture the beauty of Nature and the expansive feelings it provokes. An open quality results from meditative living in a simple rustic home, surrounded by and within the rhythms of the Natural World. The inner and outer worlds have space to build a relationship — then allowing a soulful connection to the energetic Universe at large - unveiling a voice, from which to Create.

As a psychic landscape the desert often exemplifies protracted periods of alienation, spiritual thirst and creative tedium, disorientation and depletion AND ALSO mortification, purification, redemption and initiation.

THE BOOK OF SYMBOLS

Artists are Intuitive.
They wait for inspiration.
That's what art is about,
the intuitive not the intellectual.
Art about ideas stimulates ideas, but art that comes from inspiration stimulates feelings of happiness, innocence & beauty.
— Agnes Martin

“May your Mountains rise into
and Above the Clouds.”
Desert Writer, Ed Abbey

THERE ARE NO RULES. THAT IS HOW ART IS BORN, HOW BREAKTHROUGHS HAPPEN. GO AGAINST THE RULES OR IGNORE THE RULES. THAT IS WHAT INVENTION IS ABOUT.

— PAINTER, HELEN FRANKENTHALER

Inspired by MidCentury Modern Female Abstract Painters,
Turn-of-the-Century Expressionism, and the Symbolist Art Movement, Laura explores colors, shapes and themes discovered
thru her daily ventures walking through the mountains into the expansive high desert landscape, then returning to paint from a meditative space. An abstract spiritual element often arises and infuses itself into the creative experience.
